Whip That Closet into Shape

I am always struggling with what to use to organize and create space in my closet!  So my sassy friends, its time to make that closet work for you, not against you!  I think what is difficult about this task, is that if you don’t have a custom closet you have to get creative.  I will show some of my ideas that have helped me get more organized and create more room in tight spaces!

Use hooks to hang your handbags!

Bookcases are wonderful to store your folded sweaters and jeans!

Plastic storage bins with drawers are great for your shoeies!

I have found that these fabric storage boxes are fabulous for storing my scarves and belts!

I know we have all heard of the LBD (little black dress), but what about LTS for leather, trench, and suede!  These are your essentials or better yet, your worker bees!  They will be the three items you chose time and time again!  A trench coat is so chic and can be worn for many occasions because its so classic and sleek.  I love the trench coat because it has a bit of room so you can layer pieces underneath and it keeps you dry on damp days!   Now, on to my favorite jacket of all time, the leather jacket!  This baby is your bestie because it goes with everything!  You can pair it with jeans and a tee for a laid back look or with a dress and heels for a dressy downtown look!  I would chose it in either brown or black and it can be either real or faux.  Suede is another great jacket to have, because it is so luxurious and can give any outfit a sophisticated, European chic look!  Again I would chose a basic color and you can chose either real or faux!

Note: Look at places like TJ Maxx and Target for these items, but if you have the dollars then go real honey!

Mr. Neutral and Mrs. Color

Hopefully, last week you went through your closet and decided on what to keep and what to toss! If you haven’t yet, you still got time girl, just remember the pointers I gave you to help you make your decisions easier.  So, for those of you that did your homework, give yourself a pat on the back we are now on our way to creating your own personal wardrobe!  Essential pieces are pieces you will need to create a foundation, these will be what you use year after year and season after season!  Now, it has been said you should spend your buckaroo’s on these items, but I feel you can get these pieces on a budget as well!   One thing I will stress is the fit!!!!  Make sure the shoulders of a blazer line up with your own shoulders, the line backer look is never fashionable!  Also, make sure the blouses, shirts and cardigans button and don’t gap in the bust area, no one likes a booby shot!  Down below is a style map for neutral essentials and color essentials, keep in mind you are the master of this ship so steer towards your own style and color preferences!

Impulse Gal

Have you ever been shopping and find a particular blouse or jacket that you just love and have to have it?  Then you get it home and see that you really have nothing to wear with it and so it becomes another dust collector!   So, my impulse friend get a garbage bag and lay your troublesome items on your bed, we are going to do some reality clothing therapy!  Put on your first item and stand in front of a mirror.  What do you see you like, if anything and what do you see you hate?  Now, this is a great lesson because you are creating your own personal sense of style, you know what you are beginning to like and dislike!  For the things you like, hold on to them and for the things you detest throw them puppies in the Goodwill bag!  If it has been over a year since you ever put that item on, it needs to go bah bye!   Girlfriend, you are ready to start fresh and begin building your personal wardrobe!

These are the questions you need to ask yourself each time you go shopping and are standing in front of the mirror!

What do I like about this item?

How does this item look on me, does it flatter my figure or pinpoint my every flaw?

Does this color look good on me or does it make me look pale and pasty?

Lastly and most important question of all, What do I have to wear with this and does it fit in with the rest of my wardrobe?

Note: You need to think of at least two items in your closet that you can wear with your new purchase!!!

A good thing to note here is being truthful with yourself and knowing what you will wear and what you won’t!  It is absolutely great to try new things, but a good rule of thumb is if you are not crazy about an item, put it back!
